For quite a few years, The Wattmeister has been involved audaxing. A definition of Audax, “to be imbued with the spirit of long distance cycling”.
When he started out on this lark back in 2001, a regular participant was a gent by the name of John Radford. Over the course of time, The Wattmeister would share the road occasionally with this man of smiles. Last year, John at the age of 69, and with a wealth of experience in this type of event, embarked on the mammoth 1400 km London-Edinburgh-London ride which is held every four years and has a time limit of 120 hours.
At some stage, he was knocked off his bike by a driver who has recently been convicted of dangerous driving. However, John’s injuries were so severe that he was left severely damaged. In the last few days, John was moved back to his family’s house for palliative care where he passed away last night.
Rest In Peace John.
