The Wattmeisterin is suffering from delusions of the type that afflict her celebrated husband. After Saturday’s enjoyable pootle to Deia, she is now talking about topping Strava leaderboards, participating in training camps with loquacious half-Irish, half-Belgian pro Ronnie O’Keukeleire and each new sentence begins with, “Stijn Vandenbergh says…”
Tomorrow she is determined to set a new record for Muswell Hill Peloton’s ladies’ section on the climb of Puig Major in the Tramunta Sierra in Majorca. With 820 metres of ascent over 13.7 kms and an average gradient of 6%, this will be a good test of her fitness. However, she’ ll have to be on good form to match pedal strokes with “The Sparrow’s Kneecap”, her pet name for the climbing machine that is The Wattmeister.
The Wattmeister himself is planning to tackle both Puig Major and Sa Calobra, which adds another 10 kms of climb at 7% gradient. This outing should set the veteran up nicely for his comeback race at Hillingdon this weekend…..unless of course LottoSudoCreme need his services as rouleur/domestique/baroudeur in Milan-San-Remo on Sunday….a) distinctly possible….b) highly unlikely….depending on which reality you inhabit.
