Inspired by fellow tweeter @AnelloGrande, who from time to time posts some exquisite photographs of renowned bike racers of yesteryear, The Wattmeister discovered YouTube footage of Stage 9 from the 1995 Tour de France featuring peerless champion Miguel Indurain.
The 166km alpine stage from Le Grand Bornand to La Plagne was notable for a brave attempt by the day’s victor, Alex Zulle, to wrest the yellow jersey from Indurain. However, the Swiss rider’s enterprise only managed to conjure a performance from Indurain which accentuated the Spaniard’s elegant panache and highlighted his formidable strength.
Watch the video and witness his seated drive to the top of the mountain in pursuit of Zulle, as rival after rival become ever more ragged as they try to hold his wheel. Tonkov, Virenque, Rijs, Pantani, Gotti, Rominger and Chiappucci are some of the big names who trail in his wake on the big climb.
The Wattmeister doffs his cap to one of the most stylish riders of all time.
